Driving Innovation
Turning complex product variants into scalable content
The Project
We developed a 3D pipeline tool that transforms complex product configurations into production-ready visual assets. The tool gives teams a faster, more consistent way to generate the content needed to market products across channels and use cases.

The Challenge
Modern products rarely come in a single configuration. Colors, materials, finishes, components, sizes, and options can create hundreds, or even thousands, of possible variants. The challenge wasn't simply creating more renders. It was creating a system that could understand product variation and turn that complexity into scalable output.
Defining success
Managing these combinations manually makes content production increasingly complex. Teams need to keep product data accurate while generating enough visual content to support an increasing number of needs.
Simplify Product Complexity
The Variant Compiler provides a structured way to define, manage, and compile product variants, reducing the manual effort required to prepare individual configurations.
Scale Content Production
Instead of treating every variant as a separate production task, the system enables teams to generate large volumes of visual outputs from a shared product foundation.
Create Consistency
By connecting variants to structured 3D assets, teams can maintain greater consistency across the content they create—while reducing the risk of errors and disconnected workflows.
The Partnership
Turning a complex technical challenge into an intuitive experience
Building the Variant Compiler required close collaboration between Magnetic and Adobe’s Substance team. The challenge was deeply technical, but the experience couldn’t feel that way to the people using it.
Key Challenges:
- Managing complex product configurations and nested variants
- Making technical 3D workflows accessible to non-technical users
- Supporting large numbers of potential product combinations
- Maintaining consistency across generated outputs
- Creating a workflow that could scale with increasingly complex products
We worked across strategy, UX, UI, development, and QA to translate complex 3D workflows into an approachable tool for the teams responsible for creating and managing product content.
Key Features:
- Compile complex product variants into structured outputs
- Manage nested materials, components, and configurations
- Connect product data with 3D assets
- Generate consistent visual content at scale
- Create a foundation for downstream marketing and commerce experiences
Getting right to work
Pairing 3D expertise with in-depth product thinking.
The Variant Compiler presented a unique challenge: the underlying technology is inherently complex, but the experience needed to be clear and approachable.
We started by mapping the users, workflows, and decisions involved in compiling product variants. From there, we explored existing tools and industry workflows to identify opportunities to simplify the experience.
Rapid prototyping allowed us to test assumptions early, refine the workflow, and establish an experience that could accommodate both simple product configurations and increasingly complex variant structures.
The result
From product complexity to scalable content
The Variant Compiler creates a bridge between structured product data and the visual content needed to market those products.
Instead of treating every product variation as a separate creative task, teams can work from a common 3D foundation and compile the combinations they need—creating a more scalable approach to product content production.
The result is a system that gives users greater control over product variation while creating a more scalable path from structured product data to visual content.
We created a more efficient way to manage product complexity while establishing a foundation that can support increasingly sophisticated digital product experiences.
Scaling content starts with the product
The right product foundation makes everything downstream more scalable. By structuring product variants at the source, teams can move from complexity to content with greater speed, consistency, and control.
The Variant Compiler turns product data into a foundation for scalable content—helping teams create more possibilities without creating more complexity.
Reducing the complexity of this task has effects that ripple across the multiple workflows.
